It is about time NZ started respecting the sovereignty of independent nations

Fiji’s Interim Government says it had no choice but to issue a Persona Non-Grata to New Zealand’s High Commissioner to Fiji Micheal Green.

In a statement Interim Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama said the decision was taken with deep regret and reluctance.

“The practice of quiet diplomacy was foremost given all the chances to prevail by Fiji authorities in our efforts to seek understanding and co-operation of Green to stop interfering in Fiji’s domestic affairs given our status as a sovereign nation,” Commodore Bainimarama said

“Fiji and New Zealand have traditionally enjoyed strong relations in areas of developmental cooperation, trade, investment, defence, sports and culture. At official level, the relationship has somewhat remained strained since 5th December, despite best of efforts on part of Fiji to re-engage with New Zealand.

Commodore Bainimarama claimed Fiji’s High Commissioner in Wellington has continuously been snubbed by the New Zealand Government authorities.

“The attitude of his counterpart here in Fiji in H.E Mr. Green has done little to help the situation.

“Given all these and in accordance with relevant provisions of Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations 1961, particularly Articles 9 & 41 Government has decided to declare H.E. Mr. Green, New Zealand’s High Commissioner Persona Non-Grata forthwith.

“However, provisions remain open to New Zealand to send in a replacement High Commissioner in the normal manner. Government deeply regrets this action, but in the circumstances it has had little choice.”

Commodore Bainimarama said this is purely a bilateral matter between Fiji and New Zealand and it in no way should have implications on Fiji’s bilateral relations with other countries, including its commitments and obligations to the International Community as well as the Pacific Islands Forum.
